Background The Centre for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa) is a World Bank supported center of excellence for education and research at Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The center was established to lead a high-quality regional capacity for discovery and development of drugs, vaccines, diagnostics and complex interventions and bring about fair and sustainable development in Africa. The Diagnostics and Vaccine Unit (DVU), one of the units under CDT-Africa, is looking to hire a competent Laboratory Technical Assistant who can contribute to the center. The Role of the Technical Assistant The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting scientists and researchers at DVU in conducting various experiments and tests. The applicant will also assist in specimen collection under guidance of the Project Lead Scientist, and CDT-Africa Centre Lead. The main duties include preparing test samples, culture media, subculture and preserving microbial strains, checking chemical, reagent and consumable stocks, putting orders to purchase chemicals, reagents, and consumables, keeping lab records, cleaning laboratories, machines, glassware, plates, autoclaving biological wastes and documenting test findings. Principal Responsibilities Work closely with the scientists and researchers in diagnostics, vaccine and microbial product development projects to plan and co-ordinate study activitiesWill manage the DVU laboratories at Sefere Selam campus Generate documentation in compliance with Quality Systems and Good Laboratory Practices Identifies potential problems early in a project and implementation phase and makes suggestions on how to resolve them while keeping key deadlines in mindMaintain laboratory notebooksEnsure standards and the quality of laboratory procedures by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Adhere to biosafety measures adopted in the laboratory, minding the safety of oneself and othersFacilitate maintenance of established system of organized record keeping and information management for timely delivery of results, data collection, analysis and reporting for laboratory monitoring and facilitation to operational researchFacilitate maintenance of laboratory equipment in good working order and operate equipment appropriately following SOPsPrepare lab equipment for upcoming research experimentsReport data and compile information into graphs and documentsClean and maintain lab equipment including recalibration of equipmentUse testing items and subjects to summarize resultsCollect data and information from test subjectsMonitor on-going tests and experiments, noting any differencesReceiving, labelling and safely storing samples to be testedDetermining and performing tests needed for the analysis and reportRecording tests and analyses and then reporting the resultsOrganizing and storing samples in accordance with all safety and other requirements to ensure the safety of personnel and integrity of samplesMaintaining equipment records and daily work logsStaying current on technical and scientific advances in their fieldManaging biological and biohazardous wastesAdditional tasks as directed by the Head of the center, the Unit lead or study investigators No. Required: One Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Salary and Benefits: Negotiable Reports to: DVU Team LeadTerms and conditionsSalary: Negotiable depending on qualifications and experienceTerms of Employment: Full-time and Post subject to 6-month contract renewal.Hours of work and holidays are governed by the laws of Ethiopia.
