  • [The Conversation Africa] Ethiopia has survived several dark epochs in its long history. One of them is known as Zemene Mesafint - the era of princes. This period, between the mid-18th and mid-19th century, got its name from the Bible because it mimics the biblical "period of judges" in Israel's history.

  • Addis Ababa, June 2, 2018 (FBC) - Spanish Socialist Pedro Sánchez has been sworn in as the country's new prime minister by King Felipe after the ousting of conservative Mariano Rajoy.

Mr Sánchez, who is an atheist, took the oath to protect the constitution without a bible or crucifix - a first in Spain's modern history.
He plans to see out the remaining two years of the parliamentary term.
The Socialist leader won the support of six other parties to remove Mr Rajoy over a massive corruption scandal.
As Spain's new prime minister, whose party only has a quarter of the seats in parliament, he now has to decide who to include in his cabinet and is expected to name them next week.
In a brief ceremony at the royal residence in Madrid on Saturday, Mr Sánchez, 46, promised to "faithfully fulfil" his duties "with conscience and honour, with loyalty to the king, and to guard and have guarded the constitution as a fundamental state rule".
Mr Rajoy is the first prime minister in modern Spanish history to be defeated in a no-confidence motion.
Meanwhile, Catalonia's new regional government was also sworn in Saturday, ending seven months of imposed direct rule from Madrid.
The new Catalan President Quim Torra, who is a close ally of ousted separatist leader Carles Puigdemont, said that he was committed to continuing the drive for the region's independence from Spain.

  • Ethiopian PM: Terrorism and climate change are a common fight

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Monday morning met Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn at the President's Residence in Jerusalem.

“Your connection with Jerusalem is something that goes to the roots of the Bible, and the connection between our people is not a matter of years, it is a matter of centuries, back to the visit of the Queen of Sheba,” Rivlin said. “We know you attended the funeral of the late Shimon Peres and we remember that and appreciate it very much.”

“We are very anxious to get back to the connection that we have had with Africa, and we ask you to be our sponsors in Africa in order to let us be once again able to attend all the meetings and conferences of Africa, because when we are looking to the future, and to the next decade, we know that Africa is the place.

“We have a great community of people who came from Ethiopia living here in Israel; among them are generals, doctors, pilots, ambassadors, part of the Israeli environment and experience.

“Despite of all the problems we have, together and alone, we can solve these problems and look to the future with hope.”

Dessalegn thanked Rivlin for the warm welcome he and his delegation had received at the President’s Residence and in Israel.

“We have to cherish and deepen our relationship based on our longstanding relationship,” he said. “We have many things in common, and Ethiopians deeply understand and appreciate Israel and its people, we always have Israel in our heart for many reasons.”

“The African Israel relationship truly is a gateway, we will do everything at our disposal to make the Israeli Africa relationship to grow and Ethiopia will take leadership in this regard. We know the need for the Africa Israeli relationship to deepen.

“I came to express our deep understanding, and bring our relationship to the next level. We have a lot of desire to benefit from Israeli science and technology, and harness the potential, we can benefit from your support in this regard. We have to fight terrorism, extremism, climate change, which are common problems to all of us.”

Dessalegn also thanke Rivlin for Israel’s support of the election of Ethiopia’s former Foreign Minister, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, as the new Director General of the WHO.

“He is a great personality, and we are very proud to support his election. The whole world must be proud that he was elected chair of the organization,” Rivlin responded.

  • From the introduction by author Yves-Marie Stranger

“Today, we may be sure Ethiopia is a country in northeast Africa, but the country’s borders have not always been so well defined. In the past, Ethiopia, depending on the whims and knowledge of writers and geographers, was at times made up of all of sub-Saharan Africa — with a coastline that wandered from the Red Sea to the Atlantic Ocean — or was solely the area circumscribed between the northern reach of Egypt’s desert and the confluence of the Blue Nile and Atbara Rivers. In a later earthly incarnation, the country becomes a saintly empire administrated by an anointed priest-king, known as Prester John: an empire so munificent and kaleidoscopic that it was found in the Congo, in Mongolia, in Syria and, finally, in the Christian kingdom of the hinterlands of the Red Sea. The Greek Bible had the spawn of Shem, Kush and Ham go and multiply in Egypt and Aethiopia — a tale later reprised in a legend that has Axum’s capital founded by none other than Ityopis, son of Kush. Later, the Ethiopian Queen Kandace’s eunuch is converted by the Apostle Philip on the road to Damascus — and returns to convert queen and kingdom to Christianity. . . .

It is this intertextual play carried out on a mind’s eye map, which is so fascinating to the amateur Ethiopianist, and to the visitor to Ethiopia. No country can be better grasped from the depths of an armchair, and a library is as good a place as any to make out the ancient contours of the land of Prester John, Mandeville and Rasselas, as well as the new outlines of a country that today is attempting with great vigor to shake off the modern myth it was saddled with — of Korem and the 1970s famine, of the Derg’s Red Terror, and of poverty and refugee camps.
