  • Addis Ababa, June 6, 2018 (FBC) -Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) has taken delivery of its 100th aircraft, Boeing 787 Dreamliner today, once again leading the way in fleet expansion and modernization in Africa.

As part of Ethiopian Corporate Social Responsibility commitments, the new aircraft has ferried medical equipment from the Seattle-based NGO, Direct Relief, to St Paulos Hospital in Addis Ababa.
The shipment includes surgical stools and other medical supplies to be used for both teaching and patient care, the airlines said in a statement to FBC.
Group CEO of Ethiopian, Tewolde Gebremariam, remarked, “It is an immense honor for all of us at Ethiopian to reach the milestone of 100 aircraft. This milestone is a continuation of our historical aviation leadership role in Africa and a testimony of the successful implementation of our fast, profitable and sustainable growth plan, Vision 2025.”
Ethiopian was the first to avail jet service in the continent back in 1962, and operated the first African B767 in 1984, the first African B777-200LR in 2010, the first African B787-800 Dreamliner and B777-200 freighter in 2012 and the first African A350 in 2016 and the first African B787-9 aircraft in 2017.
Ethiopian now operates one of the youngest and most modern 100 aircraft, with an average age of less than 5 years.
Marty Bentrott, senior vice president sales for Middle East, Turkey, Africa, Russia & Central Asia Boeing Commercial Airplanes on his part said, “The delivery of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner as Ethiopian Airlines’ 100th aircraft is a proud moment in our historic partnership.
Over the years, Ethiopian has been an aviation pioneer in Africa, flying technologically- advanced airplanes such as the Boeing 777, 787 and soon the 737 MAX as well. It's an honor to be Ethiopian Airline's partner. We are also proud to work with Ethiopian to continue a tradition of transporting humanitarian supplies on the delivery flight.”
“We are very pleased to deliver the 100th aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines, and to be a part of the airlines’ great success story,” said Aengus Kelly, CEO of AerCap.

  • Addis Ababa, June 6, 2018 (FBC) –Two South Africa’s firms- MTN Group and Vodacom Group-are interest in the Ethiopian telecoms market, a day after the East African country announced plans to partially liberalize its economy.

According to Reuters, South Africa’s MTN Group said on Wednesday “it was excited by the potential opening up of the Ethiopian market “as it would be a natural fit for MTN’s existing pan African footprint.”
“Ethiopia presents many exciting telecommunication opportunities and we look forward to further discussions with that nation’s authorities on potential partnerships and opportunities,” the mobile network provider told Reuters in an emailed response to questions.
Similarly, South Africa’s Vodacom Group is interested in the Ethiopian telecoms market, it said today.
“Vodacom has said on many occasions that Ethiopia is an attractive market so it follows that there would be interest. Naturally this is dependent on what might become available and if it fits within our investment parameters,” Vodacom’s spokesman said.
The Executive Committee of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) yesterday passed decision to partially liberalize the economy.
The move is aimed at attracting Ethiopian Diaspora as well as potential local and foreign investors in Ethiopia’s fast-growing economy.

  • Addis Ababa, June 6, 2018 (FBC) - The European Union expects to hit U.S. imports with additional duties from July, ratcheting up a transatlantic trade conflict after Washington imposed its own tariffs on incoming EU steel and aluminium.

EU members have given broad support to a European Commission plan to set 25 percent duties on up to 2.8 billion euros ($3.3 billion) of U.S. exports in response to what is sees as illegal U.S. action. EU exports that are now subject to U.S. tariffs are worth 6.4 billion euros.
“The Commission expects to conclude the relevant procedure in coordination with member states before the end of June so that the new duties start applying in July,” Commissioner Maros Sefcovic told a news conference on Wednesday after he and other commissioners endorsed the plan for duties on U.S. imports.
That plan also includes duties of between 10 and 50 percent on a further 3.6 billion euros of U.S. imports in March 2021 or potentially sooner if the World Trade Organization has ruled the U.S. measures illegal.
U.S. products on the list include orange juice, bourbon, jeans, motorcycles and a variety of steel products.
The European Union, Canada and Mexico have all responded after U.S. President Donald Trump last Friday ended their exemptions from tariffs of 25 percent for steel and 10 percent for aluminium.
Canada has announced it will impose retaliatory tariffs on C$16.6 billion ($12.9 billion) worth of U.S. exports from July 1. Mexico put tariffs on American products ranging from steel to pork and bourbon on Tuesday
Some of the products chosen are designed to target states of senior Republicans who are seeking to retain control of both chambers of Congress in hotly contested November elections.
The European Commission launched a legal challenge against the U.S. tariffs at the World Trade Organization last Friday. It is also assessing the need for measures to prevent a surge of imports of steel and aluminium into Europe as non-EU exporters divert product initially bound for the United States.

  • Addis Ababa, June 6, 2018 (FBC) –A study is underway to import more steel products to ease supply shortage and price increase, said the Ministry of Trade (MoT) of Ethiopia.

Steel manufacturing companies said the shortage during the past 8 months led to price increase and unnecessary spending as well as caused delay in projects and also affected the economy.
Melaku Alebel, Minister of Trade said his ministry is conducting a study to identify the gap between supply and demand.
Data shows Ethiopia spent over 4.6 billion birr to import 448.7 metric tonnes of reinforcement bar in 2016 and 4.5 billion birr to import 309 metric tonnes rebar in 2017.
Once the study is completed, the government will boost the amount of steel it imports by allocating additional budget, thus helping the country to stabilize the market, he said.
In addition to improving the amount of distribution, the study would also help to fix prices in consultation with producers and importers, Melaku noted.
