Hopefull River Project
The Hopeful River Project (HRP) is hosted by Tena Kebenana Ginfile Enatsda Mahiber, a youth organization working on environmental issues to raise environmental awareness and advocate in the local community. The HRP is an initiative to rehabilitate and restore the Tinishu Akaki river ecosystem. In parallel, the project raise awareness and advocate for sustainable waste management both from domestic and industrial waste sources. In line with this, the HRP, wants to conduct an action research to exhaustively identify and compile baseline data of the sources of pollutants to the Tinishu Akaki river. The expected outcome of the research will be a detailed review of: socio economic status, production and processing lifecycle, consumer behavioral patterns; gaps/challenges in sustainable waste management and understanding the trends of Tinishu Akaki river pollution.
Objectives of the internship
The internship with the project will provide an opportunity for university students who are undertaking undergraduate degree and who are planning to pursue a career in the fields of environmental management and sustainable development through:
Increasing their understanding of environmental management specifically Solid waste management; ecosystem rehabilitation and conservation;
Gaining practical work experience related to research, data collection and analysis;
Increasing their understanding and developing data analysis skills.
Description of duties and supervision
Under the direct supervision of the project coordinator, using a guiding questionnaire the intern is expected to collect primary data from specific stakeholders SME, cottage industries and informal businesses along the Tinishu Akaki river course. The key assignments of the intern include:
Identify the quantity and type of products and services provided by within 5 k.m radius of the Tinishu Akaki river course;
Assess the quantity and type of waste generated from these producers and service providers;
Assess their respective waste and environmental management system;
Assess the behavioral patterns of this section of the society with regards to waste management.
Qualification and Requirements
Education: Applicants should be pursuing or completed undergraduate study in disciplines relevant to the project eg : environmental science, development and social sciences
Experience: experience in social research, academic /voluntary work in the related areas would be an advantage
Language: excellent knowledge of English and Amharic
Competencies
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Willingness to acquire new knowledge, skills and being flexible
Basic knowledge on the subjects related to the project and social research
Basic knowledge of using smart phone, Google maps
Ability to work independently or as members of a team
Ability to produce results in time
Expected date of starting and duration
The duration of the internship will be for 2 months starting from July 16th.It is unpaid
