Australia’s humanitarian program provides assistance in both protracted crises and sudden onset disasters. The Horn of Africa (including South Sudan) is a primary focus of Australia’s humanitarian assistance program. The Humanitarian Officer will help coordinate Australia’s response to the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan and surrounding countries, working closely with the United Nations, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and bilateral donor partners. About the position: Under the direction of the Second Secretary Political (South Sudan), the Humanitarian Officer will coordinate Australia’s humanitarian program in South Sudan in partnership with governments and other partners. Monitoring and reporting on Australia’s humanitarian commitments will be a focus of the position. The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Support the development and implementation of Australia’s humanitarian assistance program in the Horn of Africa (including South Sudan), and contribute to strategic planning and risk management [30%]Monitor and review Australia’s humanitarian commitments, evaluate and report on projects and partner performance, identify innovations and program improvements, and identify and resolve problems [30%]Develop and maintain effective relationships with governments and key humanitarian actors (including development cooperation donors, multilateral organisations and NGOs) [10%]Represent Australia in relevant meetings to support the programming and implementation of Australia’s humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa (including South Sudan) [5%]Collate, analyse and report on developments relating to the humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa, the situation of South Sudanese refugees in surrounding countries and the impact on host communities [15%]Contribute to communication materials and events aimed at raising awareness of Australia’s humanitarian assistance [5%]Support visits by Australian officials and manage elements of VIP visits relating to Australia’s humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa (including South Sudan) [5%]
