Call for Individual Consultancy to Review Amharic - English Glossary of Technical Terms in Population and DevelopmentBackground: The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences is established with the objectives of advancing scientific knowledge in Ethiopia and providing evidence-based advice to the Government of Ethiopia on issues of national importance. One of the constraints in advancing scientific knowledge and evidence and in the formulation of evidence-based policies is the unavailability of information in a language that is accessible to policymakers, academia, the media community and the public at large. When it comes to population and development, a key limitation is the lack of consensus on local terms/ local lexicons (to be) used when discussing pertinent concepts in the field. To contribute to addressing this limitation, EAS in partnership with Population Reference Bureau, has produced Amharic-English glossary of terms and concepts in the disciplinary domain of population and development.  Scope of Work – Process of Review: The Amharic-English glossary contains about 1700 technical terms in population and development. The consultant will thoroughly review, proofread and edit the glossary to ensure that it is in line with the scope and suitable for the target audience of the glossary. The consultant will be expected to go through every term in the glossary and conduct the review as per the guideline that will be prepared by EAS. The review will be conducted in two rounds: First round: Reviewer will thoroughly review and edit glossary Review each equivalent Amharic terms against the English term using the checklist and guideline that will be provided by EAS Accuracy of term and definitions – is the Amharic term accurately coined/translated, does the translated definition convey the essence of the term?Precision (no ambiguity) - Conciseness (economy)Generativity – does the equivalent term provide derivatives?Transparency (self-explanatory) Linguistic propriety (anti-obscenity)Uniformity – are terms uniformly used across the glossary? (Unless there is a different pattern of use across sub-categories) Simplicity (for wider use) – can newly coined technical terms be easily integrated into the vocabulary of the general public? Second and final round: Consultant will participate in presenting at a consultative workshop which will be organized to draw further feedback from a wider range of stakeholder. The expert team will incorporate reviews from the workshop and consultant.Consultant will conduct a final review to make sure that edits, reviews and relevant comments from the workshop are incorporated in the glossary. Expected output/deliverables: Thoroughly reviewed and edited glossary, in soft (in track changes) and hard copy, according to the scope of the glossary and the guidelines of review Second round review after team incorporates feedbackFinal version of the reviewed materials as per the agreed upon timeDuration of review: 3 weeks Required reviewers: 1 (One)
