ADDIS ABABA – The government is working diligently to render senior citizens' life stable. To this effect, multipurpose senior citizen centers are also under construction at state and federal levels.
These centers will also be places where elders share their life experiences for this generation. The centers will also be spots where all, from the age milestones, converge to cross pollinate ideas— about past experiences and ways forward, among others. They as well as will be places for generating income for senior citizens.
At Awasa and Bahir Dar the construction of such centers has already been finalized and one is underway in Addis.
Approached by The Ethiopian Herald, Basazin Deribe higher expert at Communication Directorate within the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs(MOLSA) said that at a national level, the government is giving holistic support for senior citizens organizing them under associations and making them beneficiaries of development works.
About 297 new elders' associations had been established the departed fiscal year alone. They are flexing their muscles. Currently, there are about 652 associations, he said.
As Basazin also said, the government's safetynet program also cushions nation's elders, who are feeble to work and cannot fend for themselves. In cognizance of their lot, the federal government had directly released more than 1,700,000 birr for beneficiaries last year. The beneficiaries are more than one million, among which most are elders. The government is also facilitating ways to make them engage in income generating jobs that chimes in with their condition.
According to him, as per its bid to streamline discordant activities, MOLSA is approaching and coordinating organizations which work on senior citizens. Last year, more than twenty thousand people in Gambela, Dire Dawa, Tigiray and Afar states did get eye medication from the international organization. The joint move has played a key role for the successful outreaching service.
More than five million citizens did get awareness deepening training the past Ethiopian fiscal year. “The main thing is people need to have enough awareness about elders so as to pay them respect and extend to them support. We could lean on the support of citizens whose awareness is deepened,” Basazin reflected. More than hundred articles and reportage were prepared and conveyed by different communication ways to deepen society's awareness.
According to him, to make elders profitable of the nation's developmental thrust in all spheres of endeavor like health ,construction, among others, the law emphasizes taking elders into consideration. To follow up things, legal bodies are put in place.Elders have a right to protect themselves using their respective associations as shields.
The government believes that senior citizens could lend a hand and expertise to the nation's development, according to Basazin. They could play a great role in keeping peace and brokering peace whenever instability surfaces in the country. They as well could help in breathing life in to the age-old affectionate bond and chemistry among citizens. As such, the government will continue deriving the maximum benefits it could get from senior citizens, whom it helps stand on their feet.
“The tangible and intangible wealth of the country are the fruits of elders' effort. They inherited them from the previous generation, developed them by themselves and passed them down to us. Though what we do could not compensate them enough , we need do something to make their life modest and cheer them up,” Basazin said and finally he called up on citizens to protect and respect elders.
