  • Addis Ababa, June 28, 2018 (FBC) –Ethiopia and Eritrea will hold a meeting at leaders-level soon, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

    Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki will meet soon.
    According to him, the visit by the Eritrean delegation paved fertile ground to restore peace between the two countries.
    Prime Minister Dr Abiy sent a letter to President Isaias today.
    Eritrean delegation composed of Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Presidential Adviser Yemane Ghebreab arrived in Ethiopia last Tuesday.
    Yesterday, the delegation visited the Hawassa industrial park, 275 km from the capital Addis Ababa.
    The industrial park has so far attracted 18 leading global apparel and textile companies as well as created jobs for over 18,000 people.

  • Addis Ababa, June 27, 2018 (FBC) -Ethiopia officially started crude oil production test in Ogaden region, Ethiopian Somali regional state, today.

    Chief Administrator of the regional state, Abdi Mohammed, and Government Communication Affairs Office Minister, Ahmed Shide, and other senior government officials attended the launching ceremony.
    Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed yesterday said that the Chinese Poly-GCL Petroleum Investment Limited will start producing 450 barrels of crude oil in day as of June 28, 2018.
    Regarding natural gas extraction, the Premier said construction of a pipeline will be started next September to export gas via Djibouti. The construction of the pipeline will take two years.
    Ethiopia will earn 8 billion US dollars annually once it begins exporting gas with its full capacity, he said.
    The agreement to explore natural gas was sign between Ethiopia and Poly-GCL in 2013.

  • Addis Ababa, June 28, 2018 FBC) –The Prime Minister office announced the establishment of committees which investigate the conspiracies being committed to deter ongoing reforms in the country.

    According to a statement issued by the office today, the committees will bring perpetrators to justice once the investigations are completed.
    Two people were killed and more than 150 others injured in a hand grenade attack at a public rally held last Saturday to show support for the reform agenda of Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed.
    In addition to the bomb attack, there was power outage and network connections were unavailable on that day to disrupt the rally, the office said in a statement.
    It added there are also organized attempts to cause economic harm, create inflation flare-up and disrupt service delivery of public enterprises.
    The office said the committees are working in collaboration with various bodies to bring conspirators to justice.
    The office finally called on the public to cooperate with the committees for the success of the efforts being made to bring perpetrators to justice.

  • Addis Ababa, June 28, 2018 (FBC) – The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres yesterday announced the appointment of Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia as his Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) at the level of Under-Secretary-General.

    Ms. Sahle-Work is the first woman appointed to this position, according to a press release issued by the United Nations Secretary-General.
    Currently Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), she brings three decades of progressively responsible experience at the national, regional and international levels.
    She is expected to bring to bear well-honed skills in building consensus among stakeholders, and her knowledge of the Organization in order to strengthen the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union in the area of peace and security.
    She was the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA) and served as Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), as well as Director-General for African Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
    Ms Sahle-Work has served as the Ethiopian Ambassador to France, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and accredited to Tunisia and Morocco (2002-2006).
    From 1993 to 2002, she served as Ambassador to Djibouti and Permanent Representative to the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), and to Senegal, with accreditation to Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia and Guinea (1989-1993).
    Ms. Zewde is a natural sciences graduate of the University of Montpellier, France.
