The majority of refugees are women and children who suffer from high rates of malnutrition, violence and sexual abuse. There are, in addition, internally displaced Ethiopians fleeing drought and ethnic conflict over land. Canada will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of refugees and internally displaced Ethiopians, ensuring access to impartial assistance, free from all forms of violence and coercion, including gender-based violence.Ethiopia has actively worked to establish an enabling environment for positive transformation in gender relations. Achieving gender equality, empowering all women and girls, and the realization of their human rights is critical to the achievement of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
