  • Addis Ababa, June 19, 2018 (FBC) - The Turkish army has said its forces have begun patrols along the outskirts of the northern Syrian city of Manbij, in cooperation with US soldiers in the area.

The announcement on Monday came after Turkish and US military officials agreed earlier this month to a plan for the withdrawal of Kurdish fighters considered "terrorists" by Ankara from the city.
The Turkish army announced on Monday the launch of the operation between Manbij and an area it controls after one of its two cross-border military campaigns along with Syrian rebels in the past two years.
"As per the Manbij Roadmap and Safety Principles previously agreed upon, independent patrol activities by soldiers of Turkish Armed Forces and US Armed Forces have begun on the line between (the Turkish-controlled) area and Manbij," Turkey's armed forces said on Twitter.
Addressing supporters at an election rally in the Black Sea province of Samsun, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: "We had said that terror organisations will leave Manbij.
"We had also talked about patrol missions in Manbij," he added, ahead of the country's key presidential and parliamentary polls on Sunday.
Al Jazeera's Sinem Koseoglu, reporting from Istanbul, said the patrol operations took place near the Sajour River area.
"According to Ankara, 190 Turkish troops are deployed there," Koseoglu said. "More troops will be deployed by July 5 to the Manbij area for joint patrolling operations."

  • Addis Ababa, June 18, 2018 (FBC) –Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed today briefed members of the parliament (MP) on current affairs.

The economic, social, and political crisis occurred during the past two and three years adversely affected the economy of the country, said the Premier.
As a result, the economic growth slowed down to a single digit, he noted.
However, a reduced agricultural output caused by El Nino in the past revived in 2009 and 2010 E.C, the Premier indicated.
Broad efforts were made to improve the manufacturing sector; however, there is a lot of work ahead to achieve the target of making the industrial sector driver of the economy, PM Dr Abiy said.
The Premier stated that various measures will be taken to address foreign currency shortage in addition to boosting export performance.
According to the Premier, current foreign currency shortage is resulted from lower performance in export sector, which has grown by 0.02% this Ethiopian fiscal year compared to the preceding year.
He said efforts will be carried out to improve investment projects and control contraband trade to boost the sector.
The Premier further noted that works were underway to amend the justice system, widen the political space, and allow individuals and media enjoy freedom of speech.
He also called on media institutions to work responsibly.
Foreign countries-based Ethiopia political parties are coming to home by taking advantage of the favorable political space prevailed in the country, he said, further calling more to come and operate peacefully.
Regarding government’s recent decision to privatize state-owned enterprises, he said, the move is aimed to sustain economic growth, create more jobs, and reduce international debt, which currently stands at 24.7 billion US dollars.
Ethiopia paid 688.6 million US dollars debt in the first half of this fiscal year, he said.
Privatizing the telecom sector will also help improve quality of service by encouraging competition, he said, pledging to make necessary precautions during the privatization process.
Commenting on recent government’s decision to accept and implement the Algiers Agreement, the Premier said the decision is part of the government’s plan to avoid the standoff between Ethiopia and Eritrea as well as bring about development in the area.
The Premier also underscored the need for a new way out of the boundary-related problems being encountered in various parts of the country. Translated and posted by Amare Asrat

  • Addis Ababa, June 18, 2018 (FBC) - A strong earthquake in Osaka, Japan has killed at least three people, including a child, and injured more than 200.

Airports in the area were closed for several hours, train lines interrupted and factories had to halt production.
The 6.1 magnitude quake did not trigger a tsunami warning and nuclear plants in the area are operating normally.
Japan lies in a particularly earthquake-prone region and accounts for around 20% of quakes worldwide of magnitude 6.0 or more.
Monday's quake in Osaka occurred just before 08:00 local time (23:00 GMT Sunday) north of the city, the meteorological agency said.A nine-year old girl killed by a falling wall at her school was one of three confirmed fatalities.
An elderly man was also killed by a collapsing wall while another was trapped below a bookcase at home, national broadcaster NHK reported.
Several people were trapped in elevators and roads were cracked with broken pipes spilling water.
Some 170,000 houses were left without power and gas supplies to more than 100,000 homes were stopped, the Japan Times reported.
The earthquake registered as 6.1 on the country's scale, a level at which it is difficult to remain standing.
The quake also affected the cities of Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, and Shiga.
The quake also hit several key industrial areas near Osaka with companies like Panasonic and Daihatsu saying they were suspending production at their affected sites.
