• Addis Ababa, July 9, 2018 (FBC) - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will meet Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed on Monday evening in Addis Ababa, sources in the Ethiopian capital told Reuters.

    His visit comes the day after Ethiopia and Eritrea heralded an end to a near 20-year military standoff.
    Prime Minister Dr Abiy and Eritrea’s President Isaias Afeworki announced yesterday they would re-open their embassies in each other’s capitals, hailing a stunningly swift rapprochement between bitter regional enemies.
    They also agreed to resume airline links, free travel of people, direct international telephone connection and use of ports.

  • Addis Ababa, July 9, 2018 (FBC) - The Executive Secretary IGAD, Ambassador Mahboub Maalim has commended Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed for his “wise and courageous leadership in committing to fully implement the Algiers Agreement and normalizing relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea.”

    In a congratulatory message sent yesterday to the Premier, Ambassador Maalim said “The normalization of relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the resolution of the border issue will undoubtedly benefit the people of the two countries and would contribute to the realization of our shared aspiration of peace and economic integration of our region and indeed the continent of Africa.
    “We therefore wish to reiterate our continued support for the ongoing bilateral developments and encourage you to maintain the positive momentum towards peace”
    As you pursue your policy of peace in the region and rapprochement towards Eritrea, we also look forward to Eritrea rejoining the IGAD family and taking its rightful place of collectively advancing peace and development in our region.”
